What The Victim Feels

One victim may react emotionally while another may be very calm. No matter the reaction, the emotions are real, normal and okay.

Common initial reactions include:

  • Crying, sobbing
  • Shaking
  • Laughter due to shock
  • Denial
  • Feelings of fear, anger, shame
  • Self-blame
  • Feelings of guilt and helplessness
  • Abrupt mood changes
  • Embarrassment

Long-term reactions include:

  • Fear of being alone
  • Fear of the dark
  • Trouble sleeping, nightmares
  • Depression
  • Fear and dislike of sex
  • Trust issues in relationships
  • Flashbacks of the assult
  • Anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
